MEC Mr Kgabo Mahoai
MEC for Limpopo Provincial Treasury, Mr Kgabo Mahoai began his illustrious career
as an educator in January 1987. Demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, he rose
to the rank of Departmental Head by 1991.
Following the ANC Policy Conference on
Ready to Govern in 1992, he was selected for special training in governance,
preparing for the anticipated new civil service. This opportunity led him to the United
States, where he furthered his governance training and earned a Master of Arts degree
from the University of California, Sacramento, completing it in 1997.
Upon returning to South Africa, Mr. Mahoai served in the Limpopo Department of
Education for two years before being appointed as Deputy Director of Strategic
Planning in the Office of the Premier (Limpopo) in 1999.
In 2001, he transitioned to the
Department of Health and Welfare as Head of the MEC's Office and was promoted to
Chief Director of Social Security in 2003. During this period, he was instrumental in
the establishment of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) as part of the
National Steering Committee.
In 2004, Mr. Mahoai was appointed to the Public Service Commission (PSC) for
Limpopo Province, where he served with distinction until 2009. He collaborated closely
with the Provincial Head of the Auditor-General of South Africa to support the Standing
Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA), ensuring accountability for public funds.
After his PSC term, Mr. Mahoai joined Trade & Investment Limpopo as General
Manager until 2011, when he was appointed Deputy Director General of Corporate
Management at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
His tenure at DIRCO was marked by significant achievements, including improving the
department's audit outcomes and establishing a Secretariat for the African
Renaissance Fund (ARF), which consistently achieved clean audits.
In 2016, Mr. Mahoai was appointed Acting Director General of DIRCO and officially
took on the role in May 2017. Under his leadership, DIRCO continued to see improved
audit results and successfully managed South Africa’s terms as a non-permanent
member of the UN Security Council and as Chairperson of the African Union. He also
spearheaded the drafting and passing of the Foreign Service Bill in 2019, ensuring
legislation that addressed DIRCO’s unique needs.
Academic qualifications
Mr. Mahoai's academic qualifications includes a BA Ed from the University of Limpopo,
a Master of Arts from California State University, Sacramento, and several specialized
programmes in economics, public finance, and management from institutions such as
UNISA and the University of Pretoria
Throughout his career, Mr. Mahoai has completed numerous training programs and
courses, including the Presidential Flagship Leadership Development Programme for
Accounting Officers, Public Financial Management, and Governance Monitoring &
Evaluation, underscoring his commitment to public service excellence and
governance.
Mr. Mahoai’s distinguished career reflects his dedication to public service, leadership,
and governance, contributing significantly to the institutions he has served and the
broader South African civil service landscape. With no doubt his contribution will
greatly contribute towards the improvement of Limpopo Provincial Treasury.
Political Affiliation
Mr Kgabo Mahoai is a committed member of the ANC, with a well decorated political
background and currently serves as the ANC Waterberg Regional Deputy
Chairperson.
